Colts Roster review continued QB

Right before the Drew Stanton signing, the Colts only had Trevor Vittatoe as the sole QB on the roster. Vittatoe sounds destined to get lots of preseason snaps for the Colts, but doubt he's much more than that. Ok, we all know we're taking a QB with the #1 draft selection, most likely Andrew Luck. So, that solves the starter. Now, the backup. Didn't the Colts just learn from last year how important a quality back up QB is?!!? I had sent a query to the Colts beat writer at The Star the morning before the Drew Stanton trade that the Colts should be looking at some of the vet QBs still available in free agency. Guess they did by trading for Stanton, which would not have occurred had the whole Tebow trade...due oddly enough because of Manning signing with the Broncos.... But, do I feel "good" about our QB situation any more than I did? Hmm. Maybe a little. Stanton did fill in for Detroit admirably last year, so he's not maybe as bad as...the unmentionables.from last year. But, I'd still like to see the Colts have a solid vet to be there for our new rookie starter...I mean Luck. There were rumors that the Colts, or at least, Coach Arians was looking at Leftwich. Not bad, since Arians would know Leftwich from his days in Pittsburgh. But, I'm not completely sold he's the right mentor nor that Stanton is that guy. There are a few, very few, vet QBs still available that could fit the bill. It'll be interesting to see how they play the backup QB spot considering the disaster that played out last year for not giving that position it's due. Looking at other needs/areas for improvement on the roster for the next blog.

Colts RBs

The Colts RB situation isn't dire, but it is pretty close. Returning are Delone Carter, Donald Brown and Darren Evans. Only others on the roster are FBs Chris Gronkowski and Ryan Mahaffey. Joseph Addai hasn't been picked up by any other team. But looking around there are some very decent free agent RBs available. Four very attractive ones are: Justin Forsett, Ryan Grant, Jerious Norwood and Tim Hightower. None too old, but veterns and most with injuries in their careers. The draft doesn't look too deep at RB, especially with the Colts taking a QB first (not a big assumption here). If the money is right, I hope the Colts are evaluating at least these four free agents.

Colts "official" roster

Hey Indianapolis / Naptown sports fans. Starting a blog on mostly on the Colts, like my opinions, interesting developments, rants, but may also touch on other Indy sports, like the Naptown Roller Girls, and general Indy topics.

Blog #1: Colts "official" roster

I've noticed that when reviewing the Colts roster you've got to guess on which one is the most up to date and official. Comparing what the Colts list on colts.com versus espn.com versus nfl.com, I notice several discrepancies. For the most part they are the same. However, its unclear whether the following players are actually on the roster or not. OG Jamie Thomas, OT James Williams, LB Zac Diles, LB Jerrell Freeman, FS Jermale Hines. All depends on which one you believe, but I've noticed over the years, that colts.com doesn't always make a strong effort to keep it up to date. Not sure why, unless just sharing what is already out there and if not, well, doing what the Colts do best, keeping it unknown for as long as possible. Not sure which is the most reliable, but think its likely a combination of the three. Based on these rosters, I'll start a series of position needs and available free agents as well as make note of former Colts out on the free agent market. Next blog, I'll review RBs.
